three days of darkness in and about Israel when christ was crucified.  but, in the land of the nephites and lamanites, whole cities were buried, burned, sunken into the sea and demolished by earthquakes.  Why?

I don't know the answer why it was so much more in the americas. 
 
One thing I can think of is that the people in the americas needed a strong display of evidence from God. We know that Samuel the Lamanite had prophecied many years earlier of his birth. We can see what happened as a result of those things. In Israel - the Lord's church with Peter at the helm had great success although the apostles were all eventually killed and the church fell in to apostacy. In the americas they experienced 200+ years of tranquility and peace. The people in the americas ended up being better examples and more righteous than their Middle East counterparts. Maybe the destruction helped with that.
