I made a promise to myself that I would not join the LDS Church until GOD answers my prayer on if the Book of Mormon is true or not. I made that prayer over 3 weeks ago and GOD has not answered my prayer. What else can I do?

Sam,

Let me share with you part of an email I sent to someone else some time ago. I think these questions and these answers might be of help.

==========================================================
>What is my testimony?

Now that's a big question. Where do I start. Maybe I'll answer via a series of other questions.

>When did you get your testimony?
I grew up in a family that was always very active and dedicated to the church. My parents were not. So it was important for my family to teach me correct principles and encourage me to follow their examples. I think one of the turning points for me was when I was a teenager. We had just moved. (My father was in the Air Force.) I remember having been given the challenge to pray about the Book of Mormon and about the truthfulness of the church. I could see, hear and feel from my parents that they had a firm conviction and testimony, but I did not know for myself. I remember I would read a page in the Book of Mormon and then get down off my bunkbeds I shared with my brother, kneel down and ask my Heavenly Father if this was true. It didn't come immediately. I think the Lord was testing my desire and faith to know. But come it did. I can still look back on that period of time and feel gratitude to my Heavenly Father for giving me the sure witness that I really, really wanted and that I needed. That was just the beginning. It was a seed. (Just like in Alma 32.) And I have continued to nurture and grow that seed for many years.

>Do you have a testimony about one or more things?
I have a sure witness about many things. I have a testimony about the Book of Mormon. I have a testimony about keeping the Sabbath day holy. (There have been stories and things happen in my life about so many things - that I cannot deny the existence and power of God and His influence in my life.) I have a testimony of the power of the priesthood - even to the point of having been able to see and experience miracles happen in my life and others lives. I have a testimony of the power of prayer. I know our sincere prayers are answered as long as we have faith. Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it is no. I have a testimony of the power and influence of the Holy Ghost. I can't tell you how many times when I have received knowledge and wisdom and instant thoughts that teach me (and others) right on the spot. To be able to stand in front of a congregation - not knowing what I would say beforehand - and then having those thoughts come to my head and being able to teach them is a miracle to me. Being able to sit in counsel with people who are struggling (I was a Bishop at one time for several years) - and then have inspiration given to me how to help that person - is a miracle. I have a testimony that the Lord guides this church. There is no way that this church could function they way it does with men and women of weak capabilities and then to have the Lord give those individuals the knowledge, wisdom and capability to do incredibly great things is another example of miracles in this day and age. I have a testimony of the scriptures. I get such peace and comfort given to me when I prayerfully study and ponder them. I have a testimony of tithing. I have literally seen miracles happen as a result of people's faith in paying tithing. I have a testimony of service. I have a testimony of the the atonement and of being able to repent of all our sins. How the atonement happens - I don't know that anyone fully understands the full grace and power of the atonement. I have a testimony of the joy and peace that comes from an obedient, pure and clean life. It is such an incredible blessing to be able to experience peace, comfort and joy and know that the Lord loves me and is proud of me and that I am heading in the right direction.

>Why do I believe and act the way I do?
Because I have had literally thousands of experiences of that have grown my faith and belief in Jesus Christ. I get great comfort and joy in doing His will. If I do something wrong - I hate the guilt and discomfort I feel as a result. When I do feel those negative feelings - then my soul yearns to correct the things in my life so that I can have that comfort and peace. That comfort and peace only comes through keeping Gods commandments, living how I know I should live, and through service to my fellow brothers and sisters. One of our most famous scriptures says "Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they might have joy." (2Nephi 2:25). I believe the way I do and do the things I do because I have felt and want to feel that joy.

Just some final thoughts: Years ago when I was serving on a mission - there was a lady that we were teaching that was in a similar situation as you. She said she had read and prayed and did everything she thought she was supposed to do, but still she was not getting an answer. She asked what to do. I don't know what I said back then, but I have often thought about that experience and that situation and wondered what was missing. Over the years I have come to an understanding that if someone wants an answer from God that will literally change their life - then they need to totally submit their desires and self to God and be willing to do whatever God wants. When a person is completely willing and submissive to God and be willing to give up everything including their sins (and this means also the willingness to not commit sins such as sexual morality, drinking, smoking, etc.) and be willing to do what the Lord wants you to (keep sabbath day holy, pay tithing and offerings, go to church every single Sunday, serve in callings or whatever comes your way, etc.) then the Lord will be willing to give you everything thing He has. That is a huge commitment on your part and on the part of the Lord.

Here are a couple of scriptures:
- Moroni 10:3-5 http://lds.org/scriptures/bofm/moro/10?lang=eng
- D&C 14:7 http://lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/14.7?lang=eng#6

When you have demonstrated the desire and willingness that the Lord requires - you will then receive your answer.

Hope this helps. Good luck and I'll keep you in my prayers.

2. Ways prayers are answered
It is good that you are seeking confirmation of the truth of the Book of Mormon, your prayers are heard by Heavenly Father and he will answer those prayers.

Now this doesn't mean that you will have your own first vision like the Prophet Joseph Smith did, but if we are sincerely praying and also taking time to meditate and listen to the promptings of the spirit you will receive your answer.

Remember that the spirit can communicate as a still small voice, a voice that is easily drowned out by the rush of modern life if we are not taking time to listen.

I know many people say a prayer, and think that is it. We also have to take time to reflect and meditate to give the spirit time to answer as well.

Sometimes we do not even hear a verbal answer we simply receive that feeling that what we are reading is true as we study the scriptures.

Our Heavenly Father communicates with each of use as individually so we each have unique ways that our Heavenly Father communicates to us.
