Cooking with Alcohol PDF Print E-mail

I am a chef and semi inactive mormon that is trying hard to become active and live by gospel principles and don't feel comfortable asking my bishop certain questions.  Is it against doctrine to use alcohol when cooking?  I have many recipes with alcohol in food although it would be impossible to get drunk eating them and there are no age restrictions to order them in restaurants.  Also is it ok to drink non-alcoholic beers.

1. Alcohol
Cooking with Alcohol is not frowned upon, I personally refuse to consume any dish that uses any form of alcohol in its preparation including the use of vanilla extract unless it is specifically non alcoholic.

As far as non-alcoholic beers there is not such thing, they are use ultra low alcohol content level beers and that is something that can get you into hot water with your bishopric potentially.

Realistically the best thing here is to talk with your Bishop he is your spiritual leader and between his guidance and your prayerful inspiration from the Holy Ghost you cannot go wrong.

2. Alcohol
There is nothing wrong with cooking with alcohol. The alcohol cooks out of it and there is nothing wrong with consuming foods prepared with wine or extracts unless it is added after cooking. I am an active member of the church and I prepare recipes with wine or other alcohol all the time. Also, you may not know this but alcohol is used as a solvent in most flavorings, including vanilla, personally I\'ve never heard of non-alcoholic vanilla extract. It would be nearly impossible to completely avoid consuming anything prepared with alcohol, especially desserts. Also alcohol is used as a solvent in a lot of medicines so again, it\'s nearly impossible to avoid anything and everything that has some alcohol. Like I said before though, in cooking the alcohol cooks out of it. However, if having wine or other alcoholic beverages in your home to be used in cooking is too much of a temptation for you, you can substitute other similar tasting liquids, depending on what the recipe calls for. For example, chicken broth can be used instead of white wine, or apple cider in place of whiskey. I agree with the first comment about \"non-alcoholic\" beer. If my comment still doesn\'t help, talk to your bishop or better yet you can pray for guidance on this issue. Since there are no specific guidelines from the scriptures or modern revelation, it really is a personal decision whether or not to use alcohol in cooking. I really hope this helps and good luck with your cooking endeavors.
