Sorry to hear about such a tragic accident. The Church can provide help in such circumstances. The Bishop of the Ward where your friend goes can potentially use church funds to help. For things like that of significant expense would most likely need to consult with his superior (the Stake President). Additionally the Bishop might be able to call on other church members who are financially able to help other members. LDS/Mormon funerals can be less expensive due to availability of free building for the service, a family meal provided, etc. Your friend should be in contact with his Bishop to get the needed help. It will be up to the Bishop to determine needs and then arrange for financial help based on his evaluation of the situation
