1. This question is quite vauge over the copyright, there was serval incidents where copyrights were sought for the Book of Mormon to protect it from being published for profit or to preventing the Church from printing the Book of Mormom to be distributed to the public.  
 
Either way these copyrights are secular issues that have various worldly requirements based upon the various jurisdictions on the sovereignties one resides in. A copyright application is nothing more than political red tape that the Church went through to keep the work going forward. If the paperwork states Smith as an author why do I care.  
 
Read the Book of Morman and pray about it's mesaage that will tell you the truthfullness or untruthfullnesss of it's message.  
 
2. Five miles is five miles doesn't matter if it is year 1AD or year 2012AD. Distance does not lighten or lessen due to the passage of 2,000 years. It still take about an hour and 15 mins to walk 5 miles today as it did then. Just like today the suburbs can be referred to by the urban centers name by those who have little to no knowledge of the local geography.  
 
No one says the I am going to the Tweeter center in Foxboro for a concert, they say I am going to the Tweeter center in Boston even though Boston miles from Foxboro, MA.  
 
Betheleham is a suburb of Jeruslem and various scholars have shown historical evidence per and post Christ mortal ministry referring to Jereusmlem and Bethleham as the land of Jereuslem.  
 
I fault a Nephite Prophet no more for the generalization almost 500 years before the birth of Christ, no more than a fault someone calling Foxboro, Jamacians Plains, or Roxbury, Boston today.
