I once went to a Mormon ward and I asked why they thought that the original church apostatized. They answered that once the apostles died, the church that Jesus founded eventually became corrupted. But Jesus told his apostles in Matthew 16:18 "That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." If Jesus's own church become corrupted, then that means that hell prevailed against it. But my Mormon friends then went on to tell me that even though the early church apostatized, hell did not prevail against it because there were still some believers and His church was restored anyway. But there is another verse, John 14:16, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever." If the Holy Spirit abiding with Christ's church, is it even possible for it to be led astray? Also, the early church fathers never documented any major falling away from the faith. They even mentioned bishops, so it is clear that the apostles had successors. I was wondering: - Does the Mormon church have any strong historical evidence that Christ's early church is similar to today's Latter Day Saints? -Does the Mormon church have any strong evidence that the first apostles never had a chance to pass down their authority? (for example, they showed that apostolic succession was possible when they added Matthias to the eleven apostles. Acts 1:21)
