The word of wisdom councils against the consumption of alcoholic beverages by members of the Church. Selling or brewing alcohol is not prohibited neither is the consumption of alcohol by non members.  
 
Refraining from the consumption of alcohol is commandment given to the saints to govern the conduct of the membership not the rest of society.  
 
The Church has never taught that selling alcohol is wrong, the exact wording says that it is set in place to keep the weakest of those who can be called saints from sin.  
 
The overwhelming majority of members could consume alcohol responsibly, but since the Lord knows that some would abuse this and it would destroy there progress to eternity he asks all members to willingly refrain and surface those beverages to help those who would have problems.
