Where is the archaeological proof of the Book of Mormon wars? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Roy
Friday, 07 December 2007

I am an inactive member of the church.  I became inactive about 3 years ago.  At some point I started questioning Joseph Smith.  The more I looked for positive things about him, the more I found negative information.  Such as the numbers of people he speaks of going to war in the BOM was not seen on this world until the 1950's.  Also nothing has been found of these wars, no weapons, metal materials, no bones , nothing to support his account.

Honestly I'm not trying to be negative or put down the Church, the truth really matters to me.   I wonder if you just have to have faith, and thats it, just alot of faith.  've gone to other churches just to check them out, and I have to say there is nothing there for me. I have no spiritual home now, for me this isn't a fun place to be.

Then I became inactive it happen in small pieces, what I mean is I slowly went to church less and less.  I found very few members of my Ward that seemed to care, maybe that was part of it.  Perhaps if someone had said "hey whats going on" or something, things would be different now. Maybe they didnt want to seem pushy, I dont know. I wish someone had asked.

Anyway, my question is what do you think?  From what you read here, where should I go from here, and how should I get there. Im just thinking input from someone else may help me figure this whole thing out.  Not any easy question I know  :)

1. Book of Mormon Archaeology
If you have not seen evidence, you must not have studied too much. I have a bachelor's in archaeology, and a Master's in Mesoamerican Warfare, and the academic world is FULL of evidence for not only warfare, but Book of Mormon cultures. But no matter how much there is, those who do not want to accept it, never will. There are still those that claim the Bible is fiction.

2. Well Said Jared!
It always amazes me that there is so much proof out there, that even people who have been LDS since they were young (Like I am) can still be amazed by the amount of proof we can find through archeological digs and other things that are down in South America. Thanks for sharing those websites Jared!

Roy, all I have to say, is something that I had heard from my Dad while I was growing up. He said about the church... "The Church is Perfect, The people in it aren't." I have had to remind myself again and again that that is so true. That when things happen, that when we are looking for someone to reach out to us, that they may not do it. Not because the Church itself isn't "true". But that the people in it are just as imperfect as you and I.

I know that that doesn't really address the questions that arose in your mind about Joseph Smith, or about the Book of Mormon, (I think those references that Jared put up are invaluable.) But your spirituality and your own testimony is just that. Yours. Yes, there is a lot of it that has to go on faith, but when it comes down to it, it is the testimony that you have built up inside of yourself. Your own personal relationship with your Heavenly Father.

Honestly though, I have never heard the argument that "there weren't enough people on the earth at that time". But you know what, I don't have to address that, or worry about that. Because what I know....I know. And I didn't get that knowledge from man. I didn't get it from some researcher. I know that the source of that information is the same source from which all truth flows. Straight from my Father in Heaven. And I recieved it through the manifestation of the Holy Ghost that I felt when I prayed about the Book Of Mormon. That feeling, that experience, I cannot doubt. That it why I don't have to worry about things like "There weren't that many people on the earth till the 1950's" or "How in the heck is it possible that blowing horns and cracking vases called the walls of Jericho to fall?" It really is faith Roy, when it comes down to it. But it is also the amount that those impressions have had an impact on you. So I would challenge you to come back. Make the effort, you be the one to reach out, talk to your local bishop about your confusion and desires. If he isn't helping out, talk to the Elder's Quorm President, talk to everyone till you find someone who will care, to give you what you need. This is about you.

Wishing you the best! I hope to be able to help in any way possible!

3. I understand your questions???
I don't know if you'll read this, but I've had the same feelings you have had in the past. For some reason God made it so we have to go by faith. Theres no evidence that the flood really happened. There's really no evidence that Jesus was resurrected. It's just requires faith. We grow our faith through prayer, reading of scriptures and obeying the commandments. If we don't do these things then our faith dies. Doesn't matter what denomination you are you have to nourish it. good luck

4. Thanks (from Roy)
I've just been reading the responses to the question I posted about 8 months ago, wow where does the time go. Alot has happened since then. I just want to say thanks to all of you that responded, thanks for being so positive. I've been doing alot of soul searching and praying and reading, and growing for the past 8 months. In fact I'm meeting with members of the Ward near us this week, things are really turning around.
When I first sent my question to this site I wasn't sure how people would react. But I knew I was sending it with total honesty, and I was really hurting back then. I'm grateful for the way you all responded to me. I'm grateful for alot of things these days :)
Thanks Brothers

5. Jewish traditions
I don't remember what the book was called, but the book had a whole bunch of comparisons between the Mayan and and the Hebrew culture. there are a whole bunch of similarities and i highly doubt that Joseph Smith was lucky enough to make up a culture that fit as perfectly as it does

6. TO ROY
Lets start off by I\'m sorry. My heart felt your pain as I was reading your comments, because I was there not that long ago-well 3 years ago on June 10th I was baptized. I had questions and concerns about everything that I was being taught and even things that I was being told and had yet to learn for myself. I had the same feeling of no spiritual home. I still don\'t know the answer to your question, and I hate to hear of your bad experience at your ward. I do know that if I have a question, which I often do, and I can not find that answer in the scriptures myself, someone can. The best thing I find about this gospel is that there is ALWAYS an answer. I also know that our Father in Heaven loves us enough to understand our feelings. Even if we die and our Father tells us that we were completly wrong about our religion, He loves us enough to understand and and teach us. I have no worry for you- you have said that you pray- you will find the answer you are looking for. A great quote I read in an article said, \"We have no need to be ashamed for we are God\'s own children, and though we are not yet what we will be, the Lord loves us and wants us to catch the glimmers of ourselves that he sees.\" This is amazing because we know that no matter what we do -the Lord loves us. I hope I have said something that makes you feel better.

7. TO ROY/ANYONE
I was baptized and converted (didn\'t grow up mormon)in November 2000 because I was interested in finding the \"right kind of religion/church\". Basically, I tried different churches and/or religions and none of them felt right for me and my son. It\'s not an \"easy religion\", and by that I mean the things that I gave up and the ridicule that I face. I still question my decision to practice Mormonism but, I know that I have found my \"happy place\" in this world of many religions. Besides, this life isn\'t supposed to be easy, just worth it. Being a 30-year-old, single, divorced, mother of a little boy in this family oriented church is very challenging. Though, I\'m glad to be a member and have such positive male role models for my son. I also love that this a 24/7 religion, not a \"I went to church on Sunday, so I\'ve done my duty to GOD and now the rest of the week I can do whatever I want and ask for forgiveness next Sunday\" religion. I\'m not writing this to degrade any other religion, this is how I feel based on my personal experiences. In a nut shell, Jesus and Heavenly Father love me, guide me, and are there for me 24/7, so I will do the same for them. I\'m not perfect but, I\'m trying my best to return to my Heavenly Father and be able to look him in the eyes without feeling too ashamed of my doings in this life. People will be afraid and they will chastize and judge you but, will that matter in the end? Bottom line, Heavenly Father loves you because he\'s your father, not because of what religion you choose to worship him by. If you still need guidance, just pray and he will always answer.....the answer may not come quickly, or be what you expect but, it will be the right one. Love, forgive, and serve....

Read the Bible and pray to God with an open heart and He will show you the way. I can't explain it, but it does happen, and you will know it when you experience it.
