Is there marriage in heaven? PDF Print E-mail

In Matthew 22:30 it says: For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

What is the Mormon view of this verse, as it relates to eternal marriage?

1. Marriage
This is a great question.
First to start off with, I need to go over some of our beliefs.
We believe we can be married for time and all eternity, but this is only possible if we are sealed in a Holy Temple.

Civil marriages are not horrible, but we believe they lack the authority from God, the prieshood authority that binds marriage in heaven as well as Earth. So when the couply dies, they are not bound together in marriage in the afterlife. (This is one reason we do so much work for those who have died. We can seal couples by proxy, but we believe the couples still have a choice whether or not to agree with it in the afterlife)

We believe this verse of scripture refers to civil marriage and not temple marriage. One personal evidence of this-- to me-- is that it says they are \"angels of God in heaven.\" This similar phrase has popped up for those who are not married in the temple several times in Mormon history. Being an angel is a great blessing, but we believe that those who are married in the temple can receive even greater blessings. Those who are righteous people, great people may become angels.
Scriptures that go along with this verse in the LDS/mormon canon are Doctrine and Covenants section 131 verse 4(\"D&C 131:4\") and D&C 132:16 --if you are intrested in further study you can look them up here:

Hope this helps.

2. Matthew 22:30
Our view is exactly what Christ said "For IN THE RESURRECTION they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."

The key phrase here is in the resurrection. Christ is saying that once the resurrection occurs that no once can marry or be given in marriage. This makes perfect sense because after the resurrection is judgment and once judgement comes there is to late to prepare for eternity by being sealed in an eternal marriage in a holy temple.

Matthew 19:6 says "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."

Marriage done by the proper priesthood authority in a holy temple is joined by God and it will never be put asunder!

I hope this answers your question well!
