Were early leaders of the church like Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Sidney Rigdon, and Heber C. Kimball freemasons?

I know Joseph Smith was, but I haven't yet researched if any of the others were.

Yes, some of the early church leaders were Masons. Masonism is not a religion but rather a group or brotherhood. In those days, there were men from all sorts of religious backgrounds that belonged to Masonry. 
 
If you ask a Mason today if Masonism is a religion, he'll tell you "no". It is a group of brothers that tries to do good in society.
